THE LEGAL PROFESSION'S PROBLEM
Lawyers experience psychological distress and suffer from substance use disorder, particularly alcohol use disorder, at rates far greater than the general public.

The study cited above found lawyers current alcohol consumption was indicative of alcohol use disorder (AUD) at rates more than twice those found in the general adult population. This study found that at some point during their careers, 70% of lawyers will engage in AUD drinking patterns compared to 14% of the general population.
This 2021 study shows a significantly greater percentage of lawyers use alcohol compared to the general public. Fewer lawyers are former drinkers and lifetime abstainers. Research shows most former drinkers quit to resolve an alcohol problem, indicating that attorneys are resolving alcohol problems at rates far less than the US adult population.
THE QUITTING PROBLEM
Only 17.9% of those who have ever had an alcohol or drug problem are in long-term, abstinent remission.
Only 30.3% of those who receive treatment for a drug or alcohol problem are abstinent at five years.

Treatment is exceptionally valuable; It nearly doubles long-term, self-sustaining, abstinent remission rates and even though the vast majority of us relapse, the study cited above shows that treatment reduces harmful use in those who don't remain abstinent.
But relapse is the rule. Fortunately, there is a method that augments treatment and has a 50-year, verified, 90% long-term, self-sustaining abstinence success rate, with very few instances of relapse.
THE SOLUTION
HIMS-STYLE MONITORED RECOVERY
Take 8 minutes to watch this excellent piece from CBS on the amazing success of HIMS-style recovery programs
HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) Recovery For Attorneys and Other Professionals.
Vivon has adopted the extremently successful HIMS model to help attorneys, and other professionals in related fields, recover from substance use disorders.
HIMS is a method of addiction recovery first adopted by the commercial airline industry in the early 1970s to treat addicted pilots and safely return them to flight duty. The physicians and nurses adopted HIMS-style programs in the 1990s. HIMS combines traditional treatment with extended aftercare compliance and abstinence monitoring.
90% Success Rate
90% of those enrolled in HIMS-Style programs achieve biologically verified, long-term, self-sustaining abstinent remission from addiction, with few instances of relapse. Only 30% of those who undergo treatment alone get to long-term remission, and nearly all of us who receive only treatment relapse multiple times.
Abstinence and Aftercare Compliance Monitoring are Critical
We know that the phenomenom of craving - the driving force of continued substance abuse - does go away. But it takes many months, and in some cases one to two years of abstinence and consistent participation in aftercare protocols before craving is extinguished, or sufficiently diminished, to allow for long-term, self-sustaining, abstinent remission. Treatment is exceptionally valuable, but the evidence is clear that 28 days isn't enough. Structure, accountability, and support following discharge from treatment are crucial.
HIMS isn't a magic pill, and it isn't for everyone. It works well for professionals whose participation is mandated by employers or licensing authorities. It requires work over the long-term, within proven behavioral modification paradidms. There must be appropriate leverage, structure, and buy-in from all stakeholders - family, employer, social group, and the addict or alcoholic. But it works extremely well for those who fit the protocols.
New Technology Makes HIMS-Style Recovery Far More Accessible
For over 50 years, HIMS-style recovery has proven to be, far and away, the most efficacious pathway to a clean and sober life. Technology has become available in the last few years that make the implementation of HIMS aftercare protocols available to a wide range of professionals - Lawyers, accontants, real estate professionals, stock brokers, etc.

ABOUT US
Vivon helps legal professionals, and others in related fields, escape the misery of addiction. Attorneys suffer from substance use disorders (SUD) at nearly twice the rate of the general adult population. One in five attorneys falls on the spectrum of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).
Vivon was founded by Jeff Parker, a successful Seattle attorney until alcoholism took his family, law practice, career, and nearly his life. Jeff was able to escape active use addiction and establish long-term, stable remission. Jeff has since helped hundreds of others find the path to recovery and go on to lead productive, fulfilled lives free from SUD.
The Vivon system utilizes proven prevention and behavioral modification strategies based on the successful HIMS model to combat SUD. We help those in early recovery from SUD and we provide programs for legal employers to ensure compliance with ethical mandates regarding colleagues impaired by substance use disorders.
